What ultimately drives the movie is the love story - as Hugh Hudson sought to do in вЂњGreystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the ApesвЂќвЂ“ in true beauty-and-the-beast fashion. Finally, and most effectively, a quest begins to find a lost city filled with treasure, as Mowgli seeks to save his beloved from Boone and her captors. In section two, Kitty tries to incorporate Mowgli into society, angering Boone (Cary Elwes), a suitor whoвЂ™s also an officer in her fatherвЂ™s regiment. Soon he becomes a young man, the lithesome Lee (star of вЂњDragon: The Bruce Lee StoryвЂќ), again encountering Kitty (Lena Headey), the young British girl with whom heвЂ™d played as a boy. At the age of 5, Mowgli, the son of an Indian guide, gets lost in the jungle and is raised by animals.

These animals donвЂ™t talk or sing, however, and one wonders where the movie is going before it dramatically shifts gears into a full-throttled, technically superb adventure - with more bite than most Disney live-action fare - that offers some winning moments but, ultimately, isnвЂ™t as involving as it needs to be.ДЇor one thing, the narrative keeps changing gears - from nature film to love story to actioner. Unlike the 1942 version starring Sabu, or DisneyвЂ™s animated вЂ™60s classic, this latest вЂњJungle BookвЂќ seeks a more modern tone, with the imposing Jason Scott Lee as Mowgli - a boy raised in the jungle whose four-footed pals include a bear, a wolf and a panther.
